About Me

Hi, I'm Ian Van Essen
Manufacturing Engineer & High School Tutor
Having tutored all throughout my high school and university education both privately and through professional corporations, I can safely say teaching is one of my biggest passions. I’m Ian Van Essen, and I successfully completed the engineering program at the University of Guelph.
Currently I work full time as a manufacturing engineering specialist at Magna and am working towards my professional designation. My evening hours are dedicated to helping students succeed inside and outside of the classroom.
My Method of Teaching
1.
1.
Identifying the Underlying Roadblocks
As valuable as it is for a student to listen to their tutor, it is equally valuable for a tutor to listen to their student. This is why to ensure my students get the most out of their time with me, I start off by trying to understand their individual challenges and roadblocks and the underlying cause that is creating the difficulties they may be facing.

Breaking Down the Content & Boosting Student Confidence
I make sure my students are engaged with what I am teaching them by turning school assignments into project-based activities. I also promote their learning by allowing them to become comfortable with making mistakes and asking questions. My students don’t need to fear the pressure of poor grades or frustrated teachers during our sessions allowing them to build the confidence they need to become lovers of learning.

Creating a Study Plan and Setting an Agenda
Just like with work or sports schedules, it is very important to set up a schedule that outlines the students study times and learning goals. As part of their tutoring session, I will make sure my students set aside dedicated time each week for studying taking into account the dates of quizzes, tests, and exams, as well as deadlines for papers and projects.
